Sold OutFarming doesn’t always follow a perfect schedule. On Wednesday nights, when I list produce for the Hub, I do my best to estimate what will be ready to harvest by Tuesday. But sometimes that perfect tomato ends up with a caterpillar nibble, or a cantaloupe that should have ripened three days ago is still stubbornly hanging on. To make sure I never arrive short on anyone’s order, I usually underestimate. That means I often end up with extra produce that is beautiful, fresh, and with no home.That’s where the Leftovers Mix comes in. It’s a surprise pack of whatever is still abundant after orders are filled — maybe a small cantaloupe, a handful of cherry tomatoes, a few cucumbers, cucamelons, squash, baby watermelon, bell peppers, jalapeños, or even a few habaneros. Each week is different, but it’s always fresh from the field and a fun way to share in the true abundance (and unpredictability!) of small-scale farming. It's also a better bang for your buck. Plus, a surprise is always fun, right?!
